With an opening for a designated hitter and a need Antworten

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — for more power in the lineup Hector Rondon Jersey , the Minnesota Twins found quite a fit on the free agent market with a six-time All-Star in Nelson Cruz. They’ll be counting on his impact beyond the middle of the batting order. There’s a clubhouse filled with still-developing players who could use his wisdom, too.The Twins signed Cruz to a one-year, $14.3 million contract that comes with a $12 million club option for 2020, formalizing Wednesday their addition of a player whose 203 home runs over the previous five seasons are the most in the major leagues during that span.“I don’t think we view Nelson just as a DH,” Twins general manager Thad Levine said. “He’s clearly going to be occupying that spot in the lineup, but as we’ve intimated, and you’ve got to hear in his voice, what he brings to the table is so much more than that. So we did prioritize this type of offensive production. We did try to prioritize this type of quality of character and leadership.”Cruz, who will turn 39 on July 1, batted .256 with 37 homers, 97 RBIs and a .342 on-base percentage in 2018 for Seattle. He hit a career-high 40 homers in 2014 in a one-year stop in Baltimore, after an eight-season run with Texas. Over the last five years, Cruz has played in an average of 153 games.Cruz served a 50-game suspension in 2013 for violating the major league drug agreement in relation to the sport’s investigation of the Biogenesis of America clinic. The Twins are still eager to rely on his production and mentorship in a youthful clubhouse.“I know my body. I know what I need to do to stay healthy first, you know? And what I do on a daily basis to prepare myself to be successful on the field, that’s the biggest difference,” said Cruz, who added he would be “very proud” to play in the outfield, where Eddie Rosario and Max Kepler are set at the corner positions. He’s only played there nine times over the previous two seasons. The Twins signed Logan Morrison last year for $6.5 million to serve as the primary designated hitter , but coming off a career-high 38-homer season, he struggled badly and eventually had hip surgery that shelved him in mid-August with a .186 batting average.Morrison, who wound up playing more than expected at first base while Joe Mauer recovered from a concussion, took 35 turns as the DH. He took a $1 million buyout and became a free agent. Mauer, who retired , had 33 starts. Robbie Grossman, who was not offered a contract and became a free agent, was the DH 36 times. With 360 career home runs, Cruz is fourth on the active list behind Albert Pujols (633), Miguel Cabrera (465) and Edwin Encarnacion (380). He will earn $14 million in 2019, and if the Twins were to decide to decline the $12 million option for next year, they would owe him a $300,000 buyout.By signing second baseman Jonathan Schoop and claiming first baseman C.J. Cron off waivers, the Twins have added 88 homers to their lineup after finishing 23rd in the majors with 166 last season.“I could not be more excited. Last year when I went to Minnesota, I was thinking ahead, ‘This should be a good fit for me, a team that has really good young guys with a lot of talent,'” Cruz said on a conference call with reporters.MCruz’s most important relationship in Minnesota may be with third baseman and fellow Dominican Republic native Miguel Sano Jimmy Wynn Jersey , a slugger long groomed to be a franchise cornerstone who regressed so much in 2018 he was sent to the minor leagues for six weeks of holistic reconditioning, from his swing to his attitude to his diet.“I naturally am always ready to help and willing to help,” Cruz said, “and he expressed that. He told me, ‘I want to learn how to be part of good teams.'”Schoop helped recruit Cruz, his teammate in Baltimore in 2014. Cruz is in the position that seven-time All-Star second baseman Michael Young held with Texas as the mentor of that team while Cruz was an up-and-comer.“He’s going to set a wonderful example in the way that he prepares for games and just being the person he is,” new manager Rocco Baldelli said. “That alone is going to be an asset for us going forward.” MIAMI — There is a fair chance there could be more hit-by-pitches on Friday when the Atlanta Braves visit the Miami Marlins for the second of a four-game series. The hostility between the teams began on Aug. 15. To that point, Ronald Acuna had homered in each of his previous five games. He had also homered four times in the previous three games against Miami. So when Acuna stepped to the plate to lead off the game, the Marlins certainly wanted to shut him down. But Marlins pitcher Jose Urena — who claimed he was just pitching Acuna inside — hit the Braves rookie star with a fastball.Article continues below ...Both dugouts emptied. No punches were thrown, but Urena was ejected and ultimately suspended, making him unavailable for this weekend’s series.Thursday was the first game between the teams since the incident, and the ill feelings returned.Acuna belted a third-inning solo home run, his 21st homer of the season and his seventh against Miami, on Thursday. It had an exit velocity of 105 mph and gave him the home-run lead among all rookies this season. He also has 18 RBIs this season against the Marlins, and his 432-foot monster blow seemed like sweet revenge. However, Acuna was hit again, this time by Marlins reliever Javy Guerra, who lost control of a 94-mph fastball on an 0-2 count.Acuna , who was struck on his right hand, reacted by angrily, tossing his helmet to the ground and glaring at Guerra.“He was just trying to get the ball (inside),” Marlins manager Don Mattingly said of Guerra’s pitch. “There was nothing intentional. It’s over.”However, in the bottom of the sixth, Braves starter Sean Newcomb — who hadn’t hit a batter all season — plunked Miami’s top rookie, third baseman Brian Anderson, with a 94-mph fastball.Anderson was also hit by a 78-mph curve ball in the eighth inning by reliever Jesse Biddle. It remains to be seen if Friday’s game will evolve into a beanball battle. But the focus will surely be on the pitches thrown by Braves starter Mike Foltynewicz (10-7, 2.72 ERA) and his Marlins counterpart, Dan Straily (4-6, 4.60).Foltynewicz, 26, became a first-time All-Star this year. He made his major league debut in 2014 and is now one win away from a career high in victories. He is also pitching his best ball at the moment, with a 1.35 ERA in four August starts, going 3-0 in that span. That includes allowing just one run in eight innings to the Marlins in a 6-1 victory on Aug. 13.A first-round pick of the Houston Astros in 2010, “Folty” has a strong arm and an above-average fastball. On average, his fastball comes in at 96.3 mph, and Marlins batters are hitting .182 in 44 at-bats against him this year.Better yet for the Braves Charlie Morton Jersey , Foltynewicz has bounced back emphatically from a poor July in which he went 2-3 with a 5.72 ERA.He is 5-1 with a 3.31 ERA in 10 career appearances, including nine starts, against Miami, and he is 2-0 with an 0.69 ERA in two starts against the Marlins this season.Meanwhile, Braves batters are hitting .246 this year against Straily, including home runs by Acuna (of course), Ozzie Albies and Nick Markakis.Straily is 4-3 with a 5.00 ERA in nine career starts against the Braves, and he is 2-1 with a 4.02 ERA in three starts against them in 2018.The Marlins, who managed just five hits — four singles and a double — in Thursday’s 5-0 loss to the Braves — could also be without reliever Jarlin Garcia. On Thursday, Garcia was removed from the game in the fifth inning when he was hit by a batted ball on his right shin.“He’s hobbling pretty good,” Mattingly said. “He looks like he will be out a little bit.”Regardless, Mattingly paid his respects to the Braves, who are 72-55 and in first place in the National League East, leading the last-place Marlins (51-78) by 22 games.“They have a good lineup,” Mattingly said. “It’s tough to get through there. They have a couple of switch-hitters. They have a bunch of guys who are driving in runs. It’s not just one or two guys. It’s why they are on top of the division. They have production up and down the order.”
